Catfish is a documentary that is all about a mans journey to find out whether or not a girl that he met online is actually who she says she is. This documentary is one of the only ones that i have seen that contains no archive footage for the audience to view. Although this could be seen to be a silly move by the producer of the film due to the fact archive footage is great way to explain the narrative structure to the audience, the producer has made the documentary successful without it. Through the use of lots of raw footage, and the unedited parts where emotions can be caught live without being staged, we can get a feel for what the characters are going through, and i another documentary which is successful in making the audience feel as if they are right there with the character, experiencing what they are experiencing. Firstly, the camera footage that is in the documentary is barley edited at all. This is done so that the audience gets a feel for what it was actually like and how the characters were |
experiencing that current situation. Also the footage is all used like Restrepo, with barely any editing in it so you can see how they had to film, making it easier to portray the narrative structure. also there is no voice of god for this film, it is all explained through the footage used. So this must mean that the camera work is good enough to portray the narrative structure without having that explanation for the audience.
