Overall i think that the media exam went quite well. question 1 was a very good and the clip had a lot of information in it to evaluate. i got many points to be able to use as evidence for my argument for what the clip actually showed.
there are 7 different categories which you may be asked to discuss in the exam: - gender - age - ethnicity - sexuality - class and status - regional identity - disability GENDER: your sex, whether its male or female, is biologically determined femininity and masculinity are culturally determined and matter of choice - they refer to pattern of behaviour and qualities of behaviour that we normally associate with being male or female. gender labels: over time the two genders have developed quite distinct and often oppositional gender codes - activities, spheres of activity and qualities that are deemed to be exclusive to only one group.
traditionally men have held power in our society - this system where men have power and control society is called patriarchy
textual analysis is the process by which you must answer in my exam. I will be asked to comment on how one key demographe or group is represented. Sound - diegetic sound is sound that accompanies pictures - the noise of water pouring, glass breaking, or anything else we can see. non-diegetic sound- sound only the audience hear - sound track parallel sound - music/sound suit the situation and builds tension contrapuntal sound - when the music does not match the action/situation. mise-en-scene - everything you see that helps to create the scene you see in front of them camera angles - not just he angles but the effect it has, its purpose This clip of doctor who is showing all of the above things such as sound, mise-en-scene and camera angles. There is all of these sounds that are in this clip. There is diegetic and non diegetic sound. The orchestras and the screwdriver represent both of these types of sound. the orchestra because you cannot see it, but we can hear it, however the actors cannot. the screwdriver is an example of this as well as the actors would be able to hear it as it is happening in front of them when he fires them. There is also parallel sound. the music from the orchestra is building the tension for when the doctor makes him rise from inside the cage. however, there is no match of contrapuntal sound as there is no instance when the music does not match the mood. there are 4 main types of sound:
music Music is a key sound code. The type of music in a text can convey a great deal of information about the mood/tone/atmosphere of the text. •Tension can be established, •Emotions communicated, •Context set, •End of sequence can be suggested. sound effect Music or sound that belongs ‘within the frame’ or can be considered to be a natural part of the narrative, is called diegetic music. The source of the sound is often, but not always, visible on screen. When the sounds (usually music) is used without being part of the action, it is defined as non-diegetic Silence can also be used to create tension in the audience. It is important to consider the visual codes when commenting on the effect of silence. •Building tension before entering a room, •Building tension before answering a question, Building tension before an explosionsilence voice over It is important to comment on the tone, volume and emotion of a voice-over/narration. A commentary can be used to mediate the audience’s interpretation of the visuals, particularly if the tone is moderate, assured and reasoned. In films the voice-over is generally one of the major characters and is unheard by others and provides a counterpoint to the action. a part of the sound in the clip which really represents sexuality is when the main woman is hovering her hand over the woman. the music is soft and is almost a loving song, showing passion and love towards the woman. the past two lessons we have been analysing how sexuality has been represented in the BBC drama finger smith. As well as the four things I looked at, camera, editing, sound and mise-en-scene, I got screen shots to back up my points and to make sure I have made an accurate analysis. in this shot, many things can be said about it. firstly, the dirty mirror suggests to us that there could be a dirty secret that they are hiding from one another. this clever use of props portrays a simple yet very important message. another point that I picked up is the sound in this shot. As the woman behind is fitting the dress and touching the woman at the front, the woman at the front is making noises as if she is getting pleasured by this, suggesting something to us using the sound. obviously the way that sexuality is being portrayed here is like being homosexual is forbidden as the woman is only hovering her hand rather than actually touching her. this could show that there is something blocking their love, so that's why she has to hover her hand. also the sound in this clip portrays an mage in the bedroom. The soft music that is being played suggests passion and the want for the soft skin portrayed by the costumes in this scene. The costume worn by the sleeping woman suggests that she is revealing for the woman but not fully, there is still something to hide before she can bear all and tell the other woman everything. The camera also zooms in on the bare leg of the woman showing that there is some need and want for this woman, otherwise there would be no need to zoom in to the leg. The only reason for the zoom must be because it is important to someone. this clip there is a lot to analyse. first of all the umbrella that is looming over her is black, which shows that she has a dark secret that she wants to cover up, just like the umbrella is covering her up. also the man is looming over the woman as well, showing that the man wants to cover something up about her. it could also mean, because he is leaning over her, she is inferior. The man in his position her, is in between the two women. the man is acting as a obstacle for them to be together. he is acting as something to woman has to get past to really get what she wants. the red paint that is dropping from her paint brush whilst painting the other woman is showing red. the red paint is showing love or lust. the splash shows the magnitude of the love for each other. however the red does show danger so it could be that they both have ot go through danger to get to eachother and be happy.
the overall exam is 2 hours long and is made up of two questions. - section A and section B. Both questions are weighted equally and marked out of 50 each.
Section A: textual analysis and representation - in this section you will be shown a clip of film (usually around 5 mins) and have to analyse how media concepts are used to build representation. - you are usually asked to look at how a group, place or thing is represented. - you will be asked to comment on how the 4 key technical areas contribute this representation - you will be shown the clip 4 times - no notes during the first viewing, then note taking during and in between viewings. - you need to show that you can analyse, select relevant examples and use key termanology. |
